Practitioners' Report

The Practitioners' report track will provide an opportunity to hear about others' experiences in applying object-oriented technologies and related software development practices. Practitioners' reports explore how concepts that sound good on paper (and at conferences!) work in the real world. They are a valuable means of sharing experiences, especially at the "bleeding edge" of technology. ECOOP 2004 attendees can find out what it is like to adopt a new language, use a new method, develop a common framework, maintain a large application, or migrate to object and/or component technology. Expectations, beliefs, and hopes can be validated, or dashed, by the experiences reported from real-world projects.

ECOOP 2004 attendees want objective reports with supporting evidence for any claims made, and they particularly want reports that discuss both benefits and drawbacks of the approaches used. Reports may focus on a particular aspect of object technology usage and practice, or describe broad project experiences. Submissions that focus on people, process or development challenges are particularly encouraged.

Product marketing or sales presentations are inappropriate for this forum. This is an opportunity to let your technology speak for itself.

Presentation

There will be a total of 6–8 presentations over two half days. Each presentation will last up to 45 minutes followed by up to 15 minutes for questions and answers.

Submission Guidelines

Your proposal should be electronically submitted through the ECOOP 2004 online submission system (http://cyberchair.acm.org/ecoop/).

Alternatively, you may send your proposal by email to the practitioners' report chair (egil.andersen@dnv.com). Your submission is completed when you receive an acknowledgement (via e-mail) that your submission has been received.

Your proposal must include:

  1. Either the complete presentation, or alternatively a 1–4 page abstract. The abstract should identify the issues and insights that represent the main contribution of your talk.
  2. If you intend to make a short software demo during the presentation, please describe its content in brief, and how much time you intend to spend on it.
  3. The submission must contain the following information:
  4. The submission must be files in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, PDF, HTML, or straight 7-bit ASCII.
  5. A description of hardware, software (e.g., OS, applications), and orgware (e.g., network availability) requirements for the presentation. Ecoop 2004 may provide basic equipment such as PCs, projection facilities, etc., but the availability of this and potentially other type of equipment must be clarified by consultation with the practitioners' report chair.

Selection

Presentations will be selected on the basis of impact of your results, technical merit, novelty, relevance to object-oriented technology, and also expected attendee interest in your presentation.
