SIAG GD: SIAM Activity Group on Geometric Design

Welcome to the activity group on geometric design in SIAM. The group is concerned with the mathematical and computational issues that arise in generating, analyzing, and processing geometric information in applications such as: mechanical design, process planning, manufacturing, medicine, games, animation, geology and virtual reality.

The scope of the group's activities encompasses a wide spectrum of scientific, technological, and other skills, ranging from rigorous mathematics to the subjective aesthetics of shape.

This website has evolved from the previous one that was maintained by Tor Dokken.

SIAM GD & SPM conference

The calls for minisymposia for the SIAM GD & SPM conference in Orlando in late October 2011 will be out soon. The precise dates will be out once SIAM has concluded the hotel contract negotiations.

SIAM (general) Annual Meeting 2012

We will have the opportunity to organize a track (= one invited topical speaker, four to six minisymposia and contributed sessions) at the 2012 Annual Meeting in Minneapolis.

Geometric Design

As a mathematical discipline, geometric design deals with geometric objects, such as curves, surfaces, and volumes, which can be represented in various ways: explicitly, implicitly, or parametrically, using splines (NURBS), polygonal meshes, subdivision, algebraic methods, and so on. Algorithms for interpolation and approximation, with respect to these various mathematical representations, therefore play an important role. Another important aspect of geometric design is the visualization of geometry, and with it the use of computer graphics.

SIAM/GD election

The nominating committee for the SIAM/GD election in December of 2010 (yes, this year!) is currently identifying candidates for the positions of chair, vice-chair, program chair and secretary. Please relay any (self-)nominations with suitable detail to one of
